From Huangdi Neijing to Modern Medicine: Men and Women, Different Needs in Care

Before the 10th century, both Eastern and Western medicine largely followed a “one-sex model,” viewing male and female bodies as essentially the same. Yet over 5,000 years ago, the Huangdi Neijing revealed fundamental differences—highlighting distinct growth cycles and wellness principles through the concept of kidney energy.

The idea of “women in cycles of seven, men in cycles of eight” reflects how each gender progresses through unique physical and physiological stages. By aligning with these natural rhythms, we can better prevent illness, sustain vitality, and support longevity.

Building on Dr. Chuang Shu Chi’s deep insights into women’s life cycles—“Women’s Three Springs”—Dr. Chuang Jing-Fen integrates decades of clinical experience with both Eastern and Western medicine to introduce “Men’s Three Springs,” defining three key stages in men’s health.

Together, this approach forms a blueprint for holistic well-being—recognizing that true care must be personalized, honoring gender differences and supporting the body according to each stage of life.

Dr. Jin Funn Chuang, M.D.

Graduated from the Department of Medicine at Niigata University, Japan. Dr. Chuang is the Director of The First Children's Hospital, Chairman of Windmill Healthcare Group, and Chairman of the Taipei City Chuang Shu Chi Social Welfare Foundation. As a wellness expert and author, she writes the "Healthy Eating" column for Better Life Monthly Magazine. She is also the bestselling author of How to Eat Healthily, Your Postpartum Journey with Dr. Chuang, and other popular books.

In 2005, Dr. Chuang—renowned across Taiwan, Greater China, and Japan—published the three-volume series Women’s Three Springs (Onna no Sanshun), covering key stages: first menstruation, pregnancy & postpartum, and menopause. With clear, insightful analysis of these critical periods for body rebalancing, the series deeply resonated with women readers and remained influential until it went out of print six years ago.

While many know her for cancer prevention and women’s wellness, few realize her extensive research and unique insights into men’s health. One of the founding missions of the Chuang Shu Chi Foundation was to support the health of all people.

After her passing, I compiled her handwritten notes, consultation records from her time in Japan, and published works—along with case studies and discussions we shared. From these, the idea for Men’s & Women’s Three Springs was born.
